3 Precautions That Can Block the Onset of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Jan 09, 2022Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a combination of painful symptoms including swelling, pain, tingling, and loss of strength in the wrist or hand. These symptoms present themselves as a direct result of overexertion and fatigue. Especially fatigue induced by the constant use of tools and technology. If you don’t want to develop CTS, it’s important to practice moderation with wrist/hand movements.
CTS Builds Up Over Time:
Health Writer Ashley Marcin explains that “CTS can happen when a nerve in your wrist is pinched. This disorder typically starts out slowly and gradually. It may affect just one, or both of your hands. If you experience mild CTS, you may be able to ease your symptoms with lifestyle changes and medication.” Here are a few quick tips on how to ward off pronounced CTS:
1. Slow Down:
Whenever you use a device, don’t forget to relax your grip. Sometimes people tense up their muscles extremely. Practice doing hand and wrist motions more gently, and less rigidly. Stress and tension play a huge role in muscle strain. After doing repetitive movements for a while, you can sometimes cancel out the effects of those movements by flexing and bending your appendages.
2. Avoid Non-Stop Exertion:
Taking breaks is healthy. Allowing your arms to rest and recover every so often will lower the risk of swelling. Experts believe that taking a 10-to-15-minute break every hour is a good way to prevent CTS. If you can’t afford to take long breaks, then at least create variety in your routine tasks. Avoid repetitive movements without changing up your muscle memory. It’s a good idea to also break up tasks that involve recurrent wrist and hand motion.
3. Take Comfort Seriously:
Regardless of what you do, make sure your workspace and equipment are at the right height and distance. If you’re working on a computer, the keyboard should be at a height that allows the wrists to relax without bending. Desk or table workspaces should be about 30 inches above the floor for most people. It also helps to keep elbows close to your sides as you type to reduce the strain on your forearms. Keeping good posture and wrist position is ideal.
Conclusion:
CTS tends to be ignored in its early stages because people are easily distracted from it. Unfortunately, if left untreated, people with CTS can end up suffering the loss of feeling in some fingers, and even permanent weakness of the thumb. It goes without saying that prevention is better than cure when it comes to this condition.
