4 DOs and DON’Ts on How to Build Better Body-Image

How to promote positive body image?

If you happen to be someone who struggles with overeating, chances are you feel self-conscious about your body.  And it probably doesn’t help either that food choices have been disrupted thanks to the coronavirus pandemic.  Even without the pandemic though, it’s generally difficult for people to feel good about their bodyweight, given how prevalent excessive lifestyle is. Lecturer/Nutritional Scientist Dr Jake Linardon suggests that “the media is full of unrealistic ideals about what men and women’s bodies should look like… Unfortunately, due to basic biology these ideals are largely unattainable. So, people who buy into the mantra that thin/muscular equals beauty are often left feeling sad, ashamed, and unhappy with their bodies.” It’s not always easy to feel good about yourself in light of such social pressure.

But here are a few ways to bolster your body image by adjusting your behavior:

DON’T Be Pessimistic About Your Health:

Yes, nobody’s perfect.  Yes, your body might have some shortcomings.  But this isn’t to say that you deserve to criticize or despise yourself just because things aren’t picture perfect.  If you tend to put yourself down because of the way you look – stop it.  The only way to make progress towards becoming your best self, is to be motivated and encouraged.  Plant more seeds of positivity into your mindset.

DO Appreciate Your Qualities as a Whole Person:

Body parts don’t constitute your individuality.  Features on your body will never define your character.  The sum total of who you are is a combination of your mind, body, and soul.  Recognize that the way you look is only a slice of what you have to offer to this world.  Even if there are attributes about your body that you don’t feel good about, your appearance should never be allowed to overshadow the brilliance of your being as a whole.

DON’T Compare Yourself to Other People:

The easiest way to set yourself up for failure when it comes to body image is a obsessing about other people.  Sometimes we let external voices deceive us into hating ourselves.  Other times, we can’t stop trying to keep up with the Joneses.  Either way, comparing yourself to other people is a fast lane to disappointment.  Run your own race as far as taking care of your health is concerned.  The more you depend on others to validate you, the more vulnerable you’ll become to fleeting opinions.

DO Take Care of Your Body:

Life can get so hectic these days that we don’t even realize how much we push ourselves.  People barely get enough sleep.  We stuff our faces with junk food, and seldom take time to feed our spirits.  Stop exerting your body and procrastinating self-care.  Make time to adopt and nurture habits which reinforce your confidence and enhance your health.

Conclusion:

Feeling good about yourself is a state of mind that springs from initiative.  The more you learn to appreciate your strengths as an individual, the easier it is to start improving on your shortcomings.  Don’t allow criticism to drown out your will to grow.  Concentrate on learning to love yourself a little bit more every day, and your journey towards a positive self-image will be successful.
