4 Steps to Follow if Your Spouse Trapped in Addiction
Jul 08, 2021What are the ways to help a spouse with drug addiction?
Sometimes when couples argue and fight, the root cause is personal disagreements. Unfortunately, sometimes couples can end up fighting because of toxic behavior triggered by substance-abuse. Substance abuse which goes under the radar. In situations where a loved one is dealing with addiction, it’s important to seek solutions in a mindful way. Being insensitive or hasty can often push drug users deeper into their habit.
It’s a Long Road to Sobriety:
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) cautions that, “The misuse and abuse of alcohol, tobacco, illicit drugs, and prescription medications affect the health and well-being of millions of Americans. SAMHSA’s 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health reports that approximately 19.3 million people aged 18 or older had a substance use disorder in the past year.”
Here are a few tips on how to approach the situation if you suspect your spouse is involved in substance abuse:
1) Expect a Long Battle Over Mental Health
Drug addiction isn’t a condition that magically happens out of thin air. Neither is it a problem that goes away at the snap of a finger. Come to terms with the fact that helping your spouse become sober will take months, years, or even a lifetime of therapy.
2) Learn About What They Could Be Using
Different addictions require different healing interventions. So one good thing to do is to confirm what your spouse could be using, and research what it takes to recover from it. Base your intervention on knowledge, rather than wishful thinking.
3) Call a National Help-Line
Beyond studying things for yourself, take a moment to get in touch with experts on drug-use and rehab. There are countless help-lines available that offer advice on how to confront dilemmas caused by addiction.
4) Discuss the Issue Candidly
Once you have an educated level of awareness about how to proceed, have an honest conversation with your spouse about their addiction. Make sure to stage this intervention in a safe space, where everyone can express themselves freely.
Conclusion:
No matter how things go when you bring up your concerns and reservations, remember that there’s always one ultimate goal with interventions. Rehabilitation. Even if it takes a long time to get past the denial stage, strongly advocate for rehabilitation until there are positive signs of healing.
