5 Bad Things Happen When People Develop a Negative Internal Monologue

How does negative self-talk affect us?

Most people like to think about their internal monologues as a form of daydreaming.  But our inner thoughts are much more impactful, and much farther reaching, than ordinary fantasies.  Specifically because the things we think internally can end up dictating our emotions and behaviors.  Thoughts can turn into beliefs, beliefs can motivate actions, and actions can be repeated into habits.

Always Think Good Thoughts

Mental Disabilities Scholar Kristeen Cherney explains that, “internal monologue is the result of certain brain mechanisms that cause you to ‘hear’ yourself talk in your head, without actually speaking and forming sounds. An inner monologue can help you hear your own voice while canceling out other external stimuli. Your inner voice can have negative effects if you primarily practice self-criticism on a regular basis.”

Here are a few adverse side-effects of adopting a negative internal monologue:

1) Permanent Crisis-Mode

People with neurotic internal monologues tend to exist and a permanent state of fight-or-flight.  They spend so much time in crisis-mode that stress consumes them.

2) Sleeplessness

Ever had trouble sleeping because of racing thoughts?  This is a dilemma that happens when internal monologue isn’t suppressed when it’s time to rest.

3) Psychosomatic Pain

Stress doesn’t just make people feel worried.  It also makes people feel sick in extreme circumstances.  Negative internal monologue can even trigger phobias such as hypochondria.

4) Hopelessness

People with negative internal monologues can’t help but see the glass as half full.  They struggle to find joy in life, and constantly despair about the future.

5) Low Stamina

Negative internal monologues can feed into a general lack of energy in life.  Low enthusiasm leads to low vitality and endurance.

Conclusion

Your internal monologue is an irreplaceable part of who you are.  And considering the relationship between internal thoughts and outward behaviors, it’s important to be intentional about possessing an optimistic monologue.  Negative thoughts yield negative actions, whereas positive thoughts produce desirable outcomes.
