5 Character-Building Behaviours that All Parents Should Teach Kids
May 19, 2021How can a child develop a character?
Deep down inside, every parent wants to raise the perfect kids. That definition of perfect might vary from family to family, but the bottom line is that parents want kids they can be proud of. They want smart, charming and successful kids, who possess stellar character. Unfortunately, kids don’t automatically develop strength of character out of thin air. It takes plenty of time and conditioning to acquire the kind of attributes which lead to a good reputation.
It’s All About the Basics
Entrepreneur/Writer Michael Lewis suggests that “Building good character begins at home. Parents are a child’s most significant influence from infancy… As children age, they go through stages of physical, emotional, and intellectual development that affect their ability to learn the abstract values that will govern their actions as adults. It’s important to recognize the opportunities and limitations of each stage as you guide your child to become a happy, self-confident, successful adult.”
Here are five critical habits to teach your kids if you want them to build character:
1) Acceptance of Diversity
There is no child in this world who is ever born with hate in their heart. Children learn prejudice from environmental influences. As your child matures into adulthood, teach them that hate is wrong and toxic.
2) Discipline
Self-control has very far-reaching effects on how kids cope with life once they become adults. The less self-control people have, the more susceptible they are to destructive behavior. Teach your kids how to behave with discipline both towards themselves, and others.
3) Financial Literacy
Schools teach a lot of things to people, except how to be smart with money. There are plenty of educated and accomplished people who struggle with debt and compulsive spending. If you don’t want your child to suffer this fate, make sure they understand the basic value of living within their means.
4) Good Hygiene
Practicing good hygiene isn’t just an aesthetic habit. It also has infinite health benefits. Teaching children how to groom themselves at an early age, and how to keep their surroundings clean, establishes an instinct within them which vastly improves their quality of life.
5) Etiquette
Life is an interactive experience. This is to say it’s inevitable to encounter different types of people, in different kinds of environments, under various unique circumstances. Teaching children how to be polite and cordial goes a long way towards enhancing the quality of their relationships.
Conclusion
Parenting is such a big responsibility that it’s easy to get overwhelmed and intimidated by it. After all, who wouldn’t panic at the idea of raising and nurturing another human being. As daunting as all of this seems however, don’t allow the big picture to make you hyperventilate. Sometimes all it takes to succeed at parenting is focusing on what’s important.
