5 Core Methods to Mold Strong Self-Esteem in Your Kids
May 24, 2021How to improve a child's self esteem?
One of the biggest fears that parents have from time to time, is whether or not they’re raising well-adjusted children. Every parent wants their kids to be intelligent, charismatic, and likable in a general sense. But the harsh reality is that kids often struggle with self-doubt, or low self-esteem. Sometimes this happens because of hardship, and sometimes it happens because of pressure. The Child Mind Institute suggests that “as children get older, confidence becomes an important skill. To thrive, kids need to trust in their own capabilities while, at the same time, knowing that they can handle it if they aren’t successful at something. It’s by experiencing mastery and rebounding from failure that they develop healthy self-confidence.”
How to create Self Worth and Self Confidence?
Here are a few tips on how to build strong self-esteem in your children:
1) Provide Positive Reinforcement
Being critical of children has far-reaching psychological effects, especially during their formative years. Every time your child does something good or noteworthy, giving generous praise helps them to develop a personal appreciation for their own abilities.
2) Teach them How to Be Autonomous
Parents instinctively try to keep a close eye on kids at all times. Unfortunately, this can end up smothering them. It encourages them to have a dysfunctional need for parental approval with every single decision. Teach your kids to think for themselves, and make wise choices on their own.
3) Teach them to Resist Peer Pressure
One of the most important skills that parents can teach their kids is how to tune out harmful social influence. Teach them how to say no to peer pressure, and teach them not to compare themselves with other people all the time.
4) Teach them Not to Fear Failure
Success in life isn’t measured by how many times a person wins. It’s measured by how many times we get back up to try again even after falling down. Children need to understand that mistakes can be corrected in life. But this is only possible if failure doesn’t paralyze them.
5) Be a Role Model
Some of what kids learn comes from the things they’re taught. However, some of what kids learn also comes from things that they see. The example set by parents does more to define a child’s character than anything taught in a classroom, or read from a book. Carry yourself in a way that your kids can emulate.
Conclusion
There are many different factors which ultimately contribute to the development of a child’s personality. However, parenting is without question the most prominent of these factors. Taking the time to mentor kids while they’re young sets the foundation they need to grow into healthy and happy adults.
