5 Inconspicuous Habits that Contribute to Forgetfulness
Jun 09, 2021Why I am so forgetful and absent minded?
Do you ever find yourself struggling to keep up with facts and figures? Do you often lose track of time when planning and scheduling? Do you occasionally get lost in conversations because of crossed-wires or technical misunderstandings? All of these are signs and symptoms that you could have a problem with forgetfulness. Physician Jillian Kubala advises that “Everyone has moments of forgetfulness from time to time, especially when life gets busy. While this can be a completely normal occurrence, having a poor memory can be frustrating.”
Here are a few bad things that could be triggering your forgetfulness:
1) Sleepless Nights
Sacrificing sleep might give you a few extra hours in the day, but it gradually takes a toll on the body over time. The longer you go without sleep, the more your brain is forced to exert itself without pause. This ultimately leads to memory lapses and depleted cognition.
2) Depression
Does it ever feel like you’re juggling a million different thoughts at the same time when you’re stressed out? That’s because you actually are. Stress saturates the brain with nonstop anxiety, which leaves less room for things like basic comprehension.
3) Non-Stop Work
Working too much brings about exhaustion in many different ways. It can make you physically tired, but it can also reduce your capacity to think in a complex way. This is because constant work forces neurological signals to cascade. In turn, this causes a plateau with active thinking and reasoning skills.
4) Caffeine
Stimulants like caffeine, nicotine and sugar are great for a quick buzz. Unfortunately, this buzz comes at a mental cost. When your body is ready to recuperate, bypassing your rest cycle with stimulants interrupts regenerative healing. It intensifies fatigue, makes people think slower and dulls reflexes.
5) Multi-Tasking
A lot of people think multitasking enhances productivity. But multitasking has actually been shown to have detrimental cognitive effects. Multi-tasking allows people to perform tasks without fully concentrating on their actions. This leads to lower comprehension, and weakened analytical instincts.
Conclusion
People can become forgetful for a variety of reasons. Sometimes it’s because of genetics, but sometimes it can also happen due to lifestyle. If you ever find yourself dealing with memory problems, take some time to evaluate whether you’re going through stress. It’s important to get a good balance of rest and activity so that brain functions transpire in a stable manner.
