5 Warning Signs that Your Child is Struggling with Cyberbullies
May 19, 20215 Signs your Child is a Cuberbullying Victim
One of life’s most heartbreaking problems is the menace of bullying. Physical bullying in itself is bad enough. But thanks to technology, people now have discreet ways to harass one another through cyberbullying. To make matters worse, cyberbullying is particularly rampant among young children and teenagers. Countless parents are completely unaware that their kids could trapped in a nightmare of torture on the Internet. The anti-bullying advocacy group STOMP Out Bullying suggests that “If your kids or teens are being bullied do not over-react. Assure them that you love them, that it’s not their fault, and that you will help them. Let them know they can talk to you about anything.” But how can a parent tell if their child is being cyberbullied?
Here are a few prominent signs:
1) Sudden Disgust with the Internet
Kids usually enjoy being on social media. They like connecting with friends through video games and other such platforms. If they randomly develop a change of heart about an activity they used to love, bullying could be the reason why.
2) Mood Swings
If your child’s temperament starts to go through extreme fluctuations often, this is definitely a sign that there’s something on their mind. Always look into the reasons why mood swings are triggered. Regular harassment usually provokes anger, sadness, and negative emotions overall.
3) Withdrawal
It goes without saying that the torment of cyberbullying has a discouraging effect. Kids who are dealing with this problem easily become withdrawn and secluded. Counsel your kids whenever you notice them lose a zest for life.
4) Account Deletion
Unless something unusual is going on, there’s really no reason for kids to delete their online profiles. Especially social media profiles. If your child repeatedly makes and deletes online accounts, look into whether they’re trying to evade or confront cyberbullies.
5) Nonstop Notifications
If the devices your kids use keep blowing up with notifications, pay attention to whether they get uncomfortable when checking their messages. If accessing the Internet causes visible seriousness, that means they could be staring at harassing messages.
Conclusion
Cyberbullying is an issue which requires a lot of diligence to detect, and sensitivity to resolve. Pay attention to any unusual patterns of behavior in your kids. And be prepared to intervene when they show symptoms of depression. Make sure they understand that you won’t judge or condemn them for their mistakes. And always offer a shoulder to cry on. Most importantly however, do whatever it takes to make your kids feel safe and protected the moment you realize they’re being bullied.
